IPL Rules

1) Strategic Time Out Rule In IPL

In IPL matches each team is given a ‘Strategic Timeout ‘ of 2:30 minutes during each of the innings, for the teams strategies. There are two strategic timeouts in a single innings of the match with one for each – Bowling team(between 6th & 9th overs) & Batting team(between 13th & 16th overs), making it four in total in a single match.

2) DRS Rules In IPL

DRS the Decision Review System – to review an on- field umpire’s decision, is being used in the IPL since 2018 with each team having two DRS chances in a single innings. From 2023, the players can use the DRS for wide & no balls.

3) IPL Playing XI Rules

IPL 2023 has a new rule added to the playing XI, by which the teams can declare their playing XIs to the match referee after the toss. Each captain shall nominate – 11 players with a maximum of 5 substitute fielders after the toss, by writing to the IPL match referee. Also, the playing XI teams will have a maximum of 4 overseas players.

4) Penalty For Unfair Movement In IPL

There is a penalty of five runs, if the wicketkeeper or a fielder makes an unfair movement while the bowler is bowling & before the ball reaching the batsman, calling it a dead ball.

5) IPL Slow Over Rate Penalty

There is the inclusion of slow over rate penalty in IPL 2023, after the ICC including it last year. For the bowling team not completing it’s overs in the allocated time in an uninterrupted match, can place only the 4 fielders outside the thirty-yards circle, for the remainder of the innings.

6) Impact Player Rule In IPL

. The IPL teams in 2023 – can use a substitute which is called as an Impact Player, from the list of 5 players named as the substitutes. Both teams are allowed to use one impact player per match.

. The Impact Player can only be an Indian player, unless the overseas players in the playing XI are less than 4. For overseas player as the Impact Player, he should be among the four substitutes named at the toss.

. The Impact Player can have the substitution – before the start of the innings, or after the completion of the over, or after fall of a wicket, or after the batsman retiring during the over. The retired batter is allowed to come later, if needed.

. The replaced player can no longer take part in the remainder of the match, not even as a substitute.

. The number of batsmen batting in an innings remains 11, even after the substitution by the Impact Player. The bowling team is allowed to bowl the full quota of 4 overs, irrespective of the number of overs bowled by the player they are replacing, however for the replacement is during an over – at the fall of a wicket or a batsman retiring, then he is not allowed to bowl the remaining balls of the over.
